Take Action

a message from the Reeves family

On November 16, 2024, our beloved Jaylen was taken from us in an instant. At 15, he was just beginning to look toward the future. As a big brother to three boys who looked up to him, he was excited about applying for his first job at a grocery store. He was passionate about football, always pushing himself to improve and dreaming about what could come next. Sensitive and attuned to how fast life moves, he felt bittersweet about his brothers getting older; he wanted to pause time, to slow down and enjoy every moment with them.

At his funeral, more than 300 people crowded in to pay their respects, so many that the building could not hold them all.

As we struggled with the pain of losing him, we were dealt another devastating blow: despite police finding evidence of second degree murder, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell made the decision to let Jaylen’s killer walk free. In doing so, she is choosing her own self-interest over protecting the community. This is, in no uncertain terms, a failure of the system and a betrayal of every family that relies on it for justice and safety.

Every day we are forced to learn how to live in a world without Jaylen. His friends and family miss him deeply. The grief of losing him has been a painful journey that no family should have to endure. We know we are not alone in this pain, and we fear that what happened to Jaylen could happen to other families if prosecutors continue to look the other way.

Through this tragedy we have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from the community. We are so grateful. Your support reminds us that there is power in numbers and that together we can demand justice for Jaylen. We can’t do this without you, and we will need everyone’s help in the days ahead.

We demand that Rachel Mitchell do her job and present Jaylen’s case to a jury. We will not go away. We will not stop speaking out. And we will not rest until there is accountability and justice for Jaylen. With the strength of this community beside us, we know justice is possible. This is only the beginning.
